More About Eagles - "You're Gonna Spread Your Wings and Take to the Sky"
(from the song "Summer Time")
As I mentioned last month in the LTScene e-newsletter, I have been watching (via "eagle cam") the nest on the Channel Islands, monitoring the growth of the eaglets under the loving and nurturing care provided by the bald eagle parents. Nowadays the parents are rarely seen at the nest, flying about looking for more and more food to feed the voracious appetites of the young eagles. The youngsters are beginning to take on the majestic look of eagles, flapping their wings and almost lifting off from the nest. Soon, perhaps in just a few weeks, they will learn to fly high and soar gracefully, no longer bound to the nest and able to fend for themselves.

June is the beginning of summer, and with it comes the traditional time when students will be graduating. Some of the residents of our affordable housing projects will be finishing high school and "taking to the skies". One young lady who has lived in one of our affordable housing units for nearly 13 years has accepted a scholarship to study theater arts in New York - talk about spreading your wings! We are delighted that for 13 years LTSC could be a part of her "nurturing community" and was able to see her learn how to fly. |

He’s Got Game
Cliff Sutherland moved into Casa Heiwa in 2001 with his mother and 2 sisters. While his mother studied to become a nurse, Cliff spent his afternoons playing basketball at the Casa Heiwa playground. Cliff’s passion for basketball did not go unnoticed as he won resident basketball tournaments and “schooled” Casa Heiwa staff. In 2009 Cliff and his family moved out of Casa Heiwa to a house they bought in Palmdale. On his move out day, Cliff went to the Casa Heiwa playground and attempted one final dunk that he had tried and failed so many times before. He now remembers Casa Heiwa as the home of his first dunk. This May, Cliff graduated from Los Angeles Trade Tech Community College where he played basketball. In the fall, Cliff will be attending Brigham Young University in Hawaii with a full scholarship to play on their Division II team.

| LTSC is Turning 30! |
|
To commemorate LTSC’s 30th Anniversary, we will be featuring a piece of our history each month in this space.
The Kosumosu Transitional Housing Facility is completed in 2002. This $1.3 million small apartment renovation provides supportive transitional housing for survivors of domestic violence and their children. The Kosumosu program provides a physically and emotionally safe environment to its residents as well as culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate support services. Residents become empowered to rebuild new healthier lives through living together and supporting each other while participating in the program. |

| Citi Foundation Helping to Build Affordable Housing |
LTSC is proud to have the support of Citi Foundation. Citi has awarded LTSC a grant to continue its work on the Pilipino Worker Center (PWC) project. Residents of Historic Filipinotown informed PWC about increases in rent, threats of eviction, and hardships of living in dilapidated and severely overcrowded living conditions. As a result, PWC and LTSC formed a partnership to act on the need for decent and affordable housing. This project is new construction of 45 affordable family and single apartments with community and residential service space on the ground floor. PWC’s offices will occupy the ground floor social service space, and will serve the future residents and surrounding community.
LTSC thanks the Citi Foundation for its support of our endeavor to provide more affordable housing in the Los Angeles area. |
