Little Tokyo Service Center News - January 2011
An Office With a Great View by Bill Watanabe

New Beginnings

LTSC is part of a development team to build affordable housing for youth with mental health issues who exit from the foster care system.   A couple of weeks ago, our team happily broke ground in South Los Angeles at the former Epworth United Methodist church site to build 19 units of affordable housing and a service center (which we call "the Epworth Project").

Talk about having two strikes against you - imagine growing up as a foster child and having to leave foster care due to age limitations and having chronic mental health problems!  And yet, the Epworth Project can be a new beginning for these youth, to receive supportive services and job counseling while being able to live in safe and clean housing.   This is their chance to avoid that third strike and even getting a base hit!

The Epworth Project is also a new beginning for the site, which housed a once-bustling church for over 100 years but in recent years sat empty and run-down after the church was vacated.  The site will be re-born and once again come alive with residents and youth seeking services, and will be a welcome new resource for the neighborhood.

New beginnings are a part of celebrating the New Year - a time to look ahead with hope that better days can lie ahead.   As we enter the year 2011, may the coming months bring new beginnings and better days for all of us.

How Your Support Makes a Difference

United Methodist Ministries Los Angeles District (UMLADD), Coalition for Responsible Community Development (CRCD) and LTSC celebrated a groundbreaking at the Epworth Apartments site on December 14, 2010 in South Los Angeles.

Help LTSC Make a Difference

Epworth Groundbreaking

When completed the apartments will be for low-income transition aged youth who are homeless with a severe emotional disorder or mental illness. The project has four main goals: a) expand the affordable housing stock for transition aged youth; b) build high performing, energy efficient structures which are especially lacking in impoverished neighborhoods; c) promote environmental conservation and awareness among youth who reside at the project; and d) provide workforce development to meet the needs of the youth.

UMLADD, CRCD and LTSC are grateful to all of our funders who made this project possible.

Verizon Foundation Supports DISKovery Angelina Family and Youth Digital Literacy Program

LTSC thanks the Verizon Foundation for its generous $50,000 grant to support the DISKovery Angelina Family and Youth Digital Literacy program (DAFYDL). These funds will not only help DISKovery Angelina integrate digital literacy into its Family Literacy, EL Civics and ESL courses - it will also create a slate of new youth technology and media programming. Beginning in 2011, we will offer teens classes on topics such as stop-motion animation, digital photography and more. We will also bring our Digital Institute for Youth Media (DIY Media) digital storytelling program to Angelina.

The Verizon Foundation works to improve literacy, increase health and safety, and prevent domestic violence through giving grants, as well as creating valuable community resources such as the free Thinkfinity curriculum database. LTSC appreciates the Foundation's support, which will aid DISKovery Angelina in providing literacy and 21st Century technology skills to underserved communities. Thank you, Verizon Foundation!
