Since
1986, the Asian and Pacific Islander Older Adults Task Force has
been improving quality of life for API older adults in Los Angeles
County. A powerful advocate for the API elderly community, OATF
often testifies at public hearings, makes presentations at inter-agency
meetings, and meets with government officials. They take every opportunity
they can to call attention to the plight of the severely under-served
API elderly population. For more information, please contact APIOATF
at (213) 473-1640. |

The MENTORS Project
(Multi-Ethnic Network for Training, Outreach, and Resources for Seniors) |
|
The MENTORS project provides cultural diversity trainings, workshops and technical assistance regarding outreach to L.A. County-contracted senior service providers. Trainings and workshops are held regularly and are tailored to meet the needs of providers. Trainers and consultants from the African-American, Asian, American Indian, Latino, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities participate as local experts. Technical assistance includes translating written material and assisting in identifying resources, such as temples, churches, and civic entities within ethnic communities.
Over the course of many years, several resources have been developed for providers by MENTORS, including API Elderly in Los Angeles County: An Information & Resource Handbook; a DVD documentary Understanding Diversity & Caregiving: Cambodian Caregivers in L.A.County; An Ethnic Elder Demographic Guide to L.A. County: Population Count & Disability Characteristics; and 2 resources specifically for providers, APIOATF Member Agencies Directory and Member Agencies Programs & Services. |
Cambodian Senior Nutrition Program
|
The Cambodian Senior Nutrition Program, conducted at the California Recreation Center in Long Beach, is more than a congregate meals program. Due to the trust the program has established in this hard-to-reach population since it was founded in 2001, what began as a nutrition site to serve culturally-appropriate hot and nutritious meals to Cambodian seniors, has evolved into a trusted resource to link Cambodian elderly and their families to senior services. Over 5,000 contacts are generated by this program, annually.
