13 Jan 2025 Year of the Snake Artist: Ms. J
Journey of Strength
by the LTSC Social Services Team
Every year, the Social Services Department works with a local artist for a New Year’s card design. This year, Ms. J, who is a proud graduate from Kosumosu, LTSC’s transitional shelter, designed the card for the Year of the Snake. Here is Ms. J’s incredible story.

Ever Since Ms. J was a child, she enjoyed the process of turning a basic idea or concept in her head into a physical piece of art. She is fascinated with Chinese calligraphy and enjoys doing it with her daughter. In 2019, Ms. J moved from China to Los Angeles with her daughter to reunite with her husband after a long-distance relationship with the hope of starting a new chapter. “Tim Ferriss says: Easy choices, hard life; hard choices, easy life. Yes, it was a hard choice, but I had to decide for us. So I had to quit my job and leave my city, family, and friends,” she said.
She thought this would be a fresh start, but the problems began soon after she moved in. At first, it was small arguments, mostly about finances. He didn’t want her to work, and they struggled with a single income. It didn’t take long for the arguments to turn into verbal abuse and something far worse—physical violence.
On Christmas Eve, after another argument, he hit her. She made an important decision that she couldn’t let her daughter grow up in this environment. She felt trapped—alone in a foreign country. “I knew I needed to protect my child, but didn’t know how. I just walked to the nearest police station, not knowing what would happen next.” The officer listened to her carefully, explained her rights, helped her file a temporary restraining order and connected her with a social worker. That night, she met a social worker named Carol who asked Ms. J what she needed most. She answered, “I need a job to take care of my daughter.” Carol gave her a list of agencies that could offer support. That night, she couldn’t sleep. On Christmas day, Ms. J went to the emergency room for her injury, with her daughter in tow. The hospital felt empty, like she was the only person in the world. Luckily the Center for the Pacific Asian Family (CPAF) picked them up and they arrived at the shelter just before midnight. At CPAF, she found safety. 6-10 families lived in close quarters, but there was a sense of community and support. Her immediate needs were met—food, shelter, and care for her daughter. She attended programs that taught her how to care for herself and her child.
Over the next year, she stayed at the shelter, then moved to Kosumosu, LTSC’s transitional shelter. She worked hard to rebuild her life. She returned to school to improve her computer skills. With LTSC’s help, she learned financial skills, how to care for her health, and how to be strong for herself and her daughter. Slowly, she started to regain her independence. Today, she has her own apartment and works two jobs to support herself and her daughter. It hasn’t been easy, but it has been worth it. She dreams of starting her own business one day, using the skills she’s gained.
Looking back, she realizes how much she has changed. She is extremely grateful for the people who helped her along the way—the police officer, social workers, nurses, and staff at CPAF and LTSC. Ms. J said, “I will never forget the journey that brought me here. It taught me how to be open-minded.” As she steps into the future, which may not always be easy, she tells herself, “I’m ready. I want to give back to society, just like others gave to me. My past taught me resilience. Now I have the strength to face challenges. I will always keep going forward.”
