Alan Nishio
Using the strength of his voice for over 50 years, Alan Nishio has fought tirelessly to bring equality for all. Now, he’s taking on the battle to pass Prop 16, which makes affirmative action legal in California.
“California is one of the most diverse populations in the world, and we value both diversity and fairness. But, without affirmative action, sometimes this diversity is not recognized in fairness,” says Alan Nishio as he talks to LTSC staff during a workshop about the importance of passing Prop 16.
Served on LTSC’s Board of Directors since 1984
Use your voice and VOTE YES on Prop 16!
Alan was born at the Manzanar concentration camp during World War II. This experience shaped his world view and lead him to help form the Asian American Political Alliance, the UCLA Asian American Studies Center, and the Little Tokyo People’s Rights Organization. He’s also served on LTSC’s Board of Directors since 1984, serving as President for 13 years. Throughout the years, Alan is one of many voices that’s guided LTSC on social justice matters. Alan and LTSC both fully endorse Proposition 16.
Affirmative action is a critical tool to help our communities begin to overcome a long history of institutionalized discrimination. which has consistently put people of color and women at a disadvantage. For example, because of the current ban on affirmative action in California, racial minorities and underrepresented groups go to college in lower numbers. Affirmative action allows public institutions to consider the long history of discrimination and try to correct the imbalance.

Changing Tides
For too long our community has silenced the conversation around mental health. Changing Tides, a Little Tokyo Service Center program, strives to change the conversation around mental health. Join CT’s interactive writing workshop on Nov. 17 to explore questions like, “How do you practice tenderness?” “What does it mean to nourish your soul and tend to one another?”
