Continuing the success of the previous two, Changing Tides recently held their third annual Ripple Effect: Walk for Suicide Prevention, raising over $82,000 to support their initiatives in mental health awareness, services, and suicide prevention. Over 425 people registered to walk at Torrance’s Zamperini Stadium, taking time to build community together and share stories about how suicide has impacted their families and friends.

Christelle from Karl Storz ASPIRE’s AAPI Group, one of the sponsors of Ripple Effect, finds events that focus on mental health topics to be important as “we just don’t talk about it enough.” Even with older generations establishing the norm of not discussing issues like suicide or depression out loud, Christelle thinks it’s great that “our generation are now more willing to speak about it and lessen the stigma of talking about mental health.”

Margie, with Team Mike Shintani, walked in remembrance of her son. She found community at Ripple Effect, saying that “it’s been good to connect with people that have gone through the same thing.” A large group formed to walk with her, which Margie described as “overwhelming support.” Many members of the team were “Mikey’s classmates and friends that grew up together.”

Ripple Effect provides the opportunity to not only raise funds and awareness for AAPI mental health causes, but also to honor those lost due to suicide. By bringing hundreds of people together in support of one cause, a space of healing and shared purpose is created. Read some more reflections on past Ripple Effect events below.
